The Challenge
Portfolio Creative Services Group was engaged by Brisbane City Council to refresh the livery across its Waste and Resource Recovery collections fleet.
Council’s highly visible collection vehicles are present throughout Brisbane communities every day, providing an opportunity not only to identify the services provided by Council, but importantly, to help residents better understand what goes in each type of bin to improve waste minimisation, and resource recovery outcomes, to align with the city’s sustainability goals.
Flexibility, efficiency and longevity were key for the new creative, with consideration for visual consistency throughout the various application sizes and vehicle configurations of Council’s approximately 200-strong fleet.
Helping Brisbane residents to “Sort smart, bin better”
Portfolio developed and refined a unifying key message and call to action, along with a suite of succinct, highly impactful messaging designed to be informative, memorable and easy to understand at a glance across individual waste streams: general waste, recycling, green waste, dual collection and kerbside large-item service vehicles.
To ensure that the imagery reinforced the messaging, determining the items shown with each waste stream required considerable attention to the type, variety, scale and recognition of individual items to provide Brisbane residents with a clear visual reference for the materials that belong in each bin.
The Outcome
The completed livery transforms an essential operational fleet into a highly visible public information network. Every vehicle now has the potential to improve the Council’s waste and resource recovery outcomes while performing its everyday collection role.
The scale of this project demonstrates Portfolio’s ability to efficiently deliver a complex public-sector communications project from creative strategy and content development through stakeholder consultation, design development and final production artwork.
